Integrative Neurology
Integrative neurology asks a question conventional practice often leaves unanswered: once the prescription is written, what else changes the trajectory of a neurological condition? This session at the Neurology Conference examines the deliberate, evidence-weighted combination of pharmacologic treatment with nutrition, sleep restoration, structured exercise, mind–body practice and behavioural therapy — not as an alternative to neurology, but as a second lever applied alongside it.
The distinction matters clinically. A patient with drug-resistant seizures, a migraineur cycling through preventives, or an adult with early memory change each face decisions in which medication alone explains only part of the outcome. Sessions here work through where the supporting data is genuinely strong, where it is promising but immature, and where enthusiasm has outpaced evidence. Discussions draw on adjacent programme tracks including the Gut-Brain Axis, Neurofeedback Systems and Brain Health in Aging Population, placing integrative practice inside mainstream neuroscience rather than beside it.
The session is built for clinicians who will be asked about supplements, diets and meditation apps in Monday's clinic, and for researchers designing trials in which the intervention cannot be blinded, standardised or swallowed.

Tier 1 — Supported by randomised controlled evidence
- Ketogenic and modified Atkins diets in drug-resistant Epilepsy, particularly paediatric
- Structured aerobic and resistance exercise in Parkinsons Disease and in mild cognitive impairment
- Tai chi for balance and fall reduction in parkinsonism
- Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia as first-line treatment in comorbid Sleep Disorders
- Vascular risk factor control as the strongest single lever against Cognitive Decline
Tier 2 — Promising, with methodological limitations
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction in Chronic Migraine and persistent pain syndromes
- Mediterranean and MIND dietary patterns, where observational signal has consistently outperformed randomised results
- Vitamin D optimisation in Multiple Sclerosis
- Yoga and breath-regulation protocols as adjuncts in anxiety-comorbid neurological disease
- Multidomain lifestyle programmes modelled on FINGER and US POINTER
Tier 3 — Insufficient or contested
- Most single-nutrient supplements marketed for memory
- Commercial "brain training" claiming transfer to everyday function
- Consumer neurofeedback devices sold outside clinical protocols
- Microbiome-targeted products preceding the microbiome evidence
