Abstract:

In clinical practice, teeth often appear as isolated structures—small, silent units of anatomy. Yet when observed through an integrative and neurobiological lens, they reveal something much more profound: a living interface where the body, the brain, and emotional patterns meet. This presentation explores a neuro?integrative approach to odontology, proposing that dental structures can act as functional markers of systemic, neuromuscular, and behavioral patterns. Teeth are deeply connected to the central nervous system through trigeminal pathways, influencing pain modulation, motor responses, breathing dynamics, and autonomic regulation. Their wear, position, and tension patterns frequently mirror chronic postural adaptations, respiratory behaviors, stress responses, and long?standing emotional strategies. By examining incisors, canines, premolars, and molars as distinct functional units, we can identify how each group reflects specific bodily and neurological tendencies—from bruxism as a neuromotor discharge to mouth breathing as a compensatory pattern with cognitive and autonomic implications.

This talk presents a functional map linking dental manifestations with neurophysiology, neuroplasticity, and behavioral neuroscience. It also highlights how the mouth operates as a sensory hub capable of expressing sympathetic activation, neuroinflammatory processes, and reward?based habits. Through an integrative clinical case, the session illustrates how reading dental patterns can offer meaningful insights into a patient’s global physiology and emotional landscape, supporting more precise and interdisciplinary interventions.

Ultimately, this proposal invites a shift in perspective: to understand the tooth not merely as a biomechanical element, but as a neurobiological organ that stores and expresses the functional history of the body and the brain. This integrative view opens new pathways for collaboration between dentistry, neuroscience, and whole?person health.
